Robert Henri wrote in The Art Spirit: “The object is not to make art, but to be in the wonderful state which makes art inevitable. The object, which is back of every true work of art, is the attainment of a state of being, a state of high functioning, a more than ordinary moment of existence. In such moments activity is inevitable, and its result is but a by-product of the state, a trace, the footprint of the state. They are records of states of being which the artist has enjoyed and which he would regain. They are likewise interesting to others because they are to some extent readable and reveal the possibilities of greater existence.” I hope the viewer feels enlivened and animated by my work, and that it beats in their own chest for a time.
I have studied with some great New England artists, including drawing, watercolor and printmaking with Joel Janowitz of Boston, moku hanga woodcut with Matt Brown of Lyme, NH, woodcut with Julia Wolcott of Watertown, MA, and oil painting with Philip Frey of Maine. I am a long time student of plein air watercolor painting with Gary Tucker of Boston. I teach fundamentals of printmaking at Little Harbor Studios in Marblehead in collaboration with Marblehead Arts Association. I am a member of the Monotype Guild of NE, a plein air painting group known as Boston Artists North, a printmaking collaborative called Four Sparrows, and a number of Art Associations, including Marblehead, Newburyport, Concord, and Provincetown.
